In the gospel we are called upon to reflect on the real meaning of fasting.
Fasting is relevant only if it is practiced for the following reasons,
1. As penance
2. As a means to realize higher values e.g. , food is not the only need for a person.
3. To re-enforce prayer of petition and seek higher guidance.
The Pharisees and others had converted fasting as a means of exhibiting one's "superior holiness”
In the first reading where we read about the rejection of Saul as king, we have excellent applications.
Read specially,
Obedience is better than sacrifice
Humility is better than the fat of the sheep
Disobedience is worse than black magic
And adamant attitude is equal to idol worship
